What is the central idea of your concentration? (500 characters maximum)
- My concentration focuses on the individual caught in sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is a form of Modern Day Slavery that impacts our society in a negative way, especially the victims who are silenced and enslaved to pleasure vile men in their preposterous schemes. I wish to raise awareness, through my narration, of this individual caught in sex trafficking.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. When referencing specific images, please indicate the image numbers. (1350 characters maximum)
- At first, I had a very basic idea of what sex trafficking was (image 3-7). I imagined the experience of this character and her entry into this industry. I found that tentacles were a useful symbol for sex and temptation. I also used jewels and coins for the idea of baiting the character.
My ideas got darker and darker until I created image 8, "Why Would You Cut These Hands? Why Would You Bound These Feet?", imagining the bondage and threats involved to keep my character in the industry even though she may not want to be in it.
My mentor recommended that I go for a real-life exposure with an organization that worked in the Red Light District. This experience and practical knowledge brought about image 1 & 2. The exposure was amazing in seeing how governments can unintentionally make sex trafficking legal. The ministry, I worked with reached out to girls in this industry. This brought about the last four images in my concentration that deal with rescue, hope, and restoration from the dark depths of this industry.
